If you are using keywords that you can optimize on but they are not very profitable words, as far as Google is concerned, then the exercise is a waste of time.

By using Google’s Keyword Tool, you can come up with a selection of keywords that would be worth looking at. The tool can be found by typing “keyword tool” in the Google search field. Enter a word you are trying to search for keyword ideas on. For instance, you may enter “making money” in the search field. Google will come up with a listing of related words for making money. It will also show you how much traffic is generated from each word, and also what the average advertising value is for that word. Pick out words that seem to be of higher value when multiplying the average volume of hits by the average advertising value. Enter these words into a spreadsheet so you can work with them further.

There is another tool available on Mozilla Firefox. This is called the “SEO toolbar for Firefox” This toolbar can be downloaded for free. Merely type in “SEO for Firefox” in the search field and find the file. Download and install it. After you have done that, you can enter each of your keywords from the spreadsheet into the Google search field. By doing this, the page ranking for each website will be displayed. If the first four websites contain a page ranking of four or above, the keyword should not be used.

You will never be able to optimize on that keyword.Enter each keyword and variations of the keyword into Google’s search field. Make note of those keywords that have websites with low page rankings. These are the words that will be the most profitable and are going to be the easiest to optimize on. You can then choose the keywords you want to use to obtain the highest ranking for, and begin to proceed with the steps necessary to get high rankings in Google.
